A digital multimeter is a device used to measure the amount of voltage, current, and resistance in a given circuitry or as a single component. It has an LED (light-emitting diode display) where data can be read. In contrast with an analog multimeter that has a needle and a gauge to determine the readings, a digital multimeter has only an LED screen as its display.

That is why digital multimeter is more accurate than that of an analog multimeter because data is given in its precise form unlike in the latter where the user has to interpret and calculate the value of the variable measured due to the needle pointing in the gauge or increments appearing on the screen. The more expensive the digital multimeter is, the more features it is pumped up or bundled with.

This device is very helpful in formulating or providing analysis and solutions to an electrical problem. Almost all field in electronics the digital multimeter finds a significant use. Examples of these fields are the automotive industry, construction, computers, machine industry, and electronics repair shops. In buying a digital multimeter, the prime consideration which a buyer should have in mind is the operating resistance or simply called the impedance.

Always refer to the impedance as stated in the specifications sheet. The digital multimeter when used becomes a part of the circuit, thus affecting the current in the circuit that is why impedance is significant.

The range of digital multimeter

The range of digital multimeter should also be considered when buying one. No matter how much current is being tested, it is important for the measurement that accuracy must be achieved as it is critical if not in the proper range. For example, if the user is trying to measure the voltage of a 12-V battery, if the setting of the range is from 0-25V, the result would be more accurate than setting the range from 0-500V. Most modern DMMs have automatic range feature which adjusts to the proper range even without the intervention of the user.

Just like any other electronic equipment, the user must read first the user’s manual of the DMM before using it. This will make the user familiar with the different function buttons and their particular requirement and limitation. Always read first before connecting the leads to the circuit. Most DMMs have batteries installed. The type of battery is different for every manufacturer. If no specific battery is indicated in the user’s manual, use alkaline batteries.

The maximum reading capacity of the DMM is very important. This is the maximum amount of current that it can measure. This maximum amount is usually indicated on the DMM’s face. The usual limit is 10A (amperes). If accidentally, the DMM is connected to 12A, the fuse inside would break to prevent damage to the internal components of the DMM.

The primary advantage of digital multimeters over analog ones is the accuracy of reading it can provide and the ease of operation.

With analog multimeters, these types also have advantages over the digital ones. An example of this is that analog multimeter can check diode more accurately. Another is short circuit problems can be determined using an analog multimeter with better reading.

How To Use A Multimeter

1. Measure Voltage with the Voltmeter

Voltage is the electrical potential of a device. This can be measured using the voltmeter function of a multimeter. Switch to the V setting of the DMM. Then connect the black and red leads to the multimeter. The red lead input terminal is labeled “VO” while the black lead should be connected to the input terminal labeled “COM”, or common terminal.

Then connect the red lead to the terminal with the higher potential (+) and the black lead to the lower potential (-) in the circuit or source voltage.

2. Measure Ampere with the Ammeter

The amount of electrical current that is flowing in the electric circuit is measured in amperes (A).

In using a digital multimeter to measure the current, set the switch function to the ‘A’ point using the dial knob. Then connect the red lead terminal that is tagged with 300mA and the black terminal to the “COM”. This is different from using the voltmeter. The current is measured along the line in a circuit while voltage is measured across the circuit.

In other words, a current is measured by a series connection with the red and black leads while voltage reading is done by parallel connection. The leads are connected between the open points in the circuit in series to measure the current. The result will be displayed in milliamperes (mA) because the setting is at 300mA terminal.

3. Measure Resistance with the Ohmmeter

An ohmmeter measures the resistance in a circuit. The unit for resistance is in ohm. That is how the ohmmeter got its name. To measure the resistance in a circuit, you have to set the function of the digital multimeter to an ohmmeter. Rotate the knob to the “O” setting. This is the symbol for ohm or resistance. Then you are ready to measure the resistance in the circuit. The red lead must be attached to the “VO” while the black lead to the “COM” terminal.

The display should read “OL” or overload whenever there is overload. Some other digital multimeter does not display this but instead displayed varying values and finally displays “1” to indicate infinity of resistance.

Now you have an idea of how a voltmeter, ammeter, and ohmmeter works using a digital multimeter. As you get comfortable using the digital multimeter, this very useful electrical device will surely be a permanent inclusion in your toolbox or bag. When you will not be using the device for a long period, remember to remove the battery from any device to conserve it and prevent damage to the internal components as the battery leaks out when not used for quite some idle period.
